Car Insurance Scion (Car Insurance). Do I have to change my brake fluid?Do I have to change my brake fluid? I've well exceeded the recommended brake fluid changing interval for my car. If I don't feel any mushiness in my brake pedal (it feels pretty firm), does it matter if I don't change the brake fluid? I read that old brake fluid can get contaminated and damage components of the brake system, such as ABS, but is that likely, and if so, how serious could the damage become? Any other potential problems? By the time you feel any ill effects, it will be too late. Brake fluid absorbs water and spreads it throughout the entire system. Water will corrode and rust the entire brake system from the inside out. Flush it. Nah your fine, only if it becomes contaminated should you change it, if it appears dark or your brake pedal get spongy. Brake fluid is hygroscopic meaning that it is very prone to absorbing water, but if its dark looking and your brakes are functioning properly you will be just fine. actually the biggest problem would be moisture from excessive heat. This is generated by the large amounts of heat given off by disc brakes, if water gets in the wrong place, like a piston and seal, it can rust and corrode the inside severe enough to freeze up a caliper. so changing dirty btake fluid is a really good idea once in a while. the fact that the brakes feel solid is a good thing but not related to this situation. dot 3 and 4 are both very aggro scopic, they pull the water out of the air. that lowers the boiling point of the fluid as time goes by. in a device where friction is an obvious product and heat is very apparent, then we know that the fluid will get hot. if it boils, just like water, you would have bubbles in the system. those bubbles compress making your brakes far less operational. outside of the us, brake fluid is flushed every other year if more often. it is not a bad idea to do that often here either. in addition, it will reduce the chance of rust inthe system. i been driving for over 40 yrs. and i have never changed the brake fluid in any of my cars and trucks. Scion . How to Change the Exhaust Manifold on a 1995 LumniaThe exhaust manifold, also known as a header, on the Chevy Lumina collects the exhaust gases from the engine cylinders and diverts them through the exhaust pipe. If the manifold develops cracks, you will need to change it or the efficiency of the engine will drop. This is a project that you can do yourself, so there is no need to take the Lumina to an automotive repair shop. You can expect it to take you about three hours to complete the project. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Marker Masking tape Wrench set Automobile jack Jack stand Wheel chocks Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative cable from the battery using a wrench to loosen the terminal nut. Disconnect the wiring harness from the oxygen sensor. Turn the belt tensioner using a wrench and relieve the tension from the serpentine belt. Note the proper routing of the belt if the diagram is missing. 2 Remove the serpentine belt from the Lumina engine. Remove the bolts from the alternator using a socket and ratchet and take it off the engine. Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the Lumina. Lift the front of the car with the automobile jack. Place the jack stand under the Lumina near the jacking point and raise it to the frame. 3 Remove the bolts retaining the exhaust pipe to the manifold using a wrench. Remove the jack stand from under the Lumina and lower the car to the ground. Remove the oil fill tube from the engine block using a wrench. Pull the tube away from the engine. Remove the nuts from the exhaust manifold using a socket and ratchet. Remove the manifold from the engine. 4 Remove the manifold gasket and discard it. Install a new gasket and exhaust manifold. Secure the nuts using a socket and ratchet. Install the oil fill tube and tighten the nut with a wrench. Raise the Lumina with the automobile jack. Place the jack stand under the car near the jacking point and raise it to the frame. 5 Crawl under the Lumina and connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold. Tighten the bolts with a wrench. Remove the jack stand from under the Lumina. Lower the car to the ground. Install the alternator and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Install the serpentine belt according to the diagram you made, or the one under the engine hood if present. 6 Place tension on the serpentine belt by turning the belt tensioner with a wrench. Connect the electrical connection to the oxygen sensor. Connect the negative cable to the battery and tighten the terminal nut with a wrench. Tips & Warnings Wear a pair of safety goggles when working under the Chevy Lumina to prevent injury to your eyes from dirt and foreign objects. Make sure the engine is completely cool before you begin this project or it could result in serious burns. The best thing to do is to allow the car to sit overnight before you begin the project.
Scion . Proper Installation of Exhaust Manifold GasketsA leaking exhaust manifold gasket could make a buzzing sound if the leak is big enough, or it could make a ticking sound. You should replace the bad gasket as soon as you notice that it is bad. On some vehicles, the job is relatively easy, but can be difficult on other vehicles, particularly some V-8s that are a tight fit in the engine compartment. Though the bolts might be difficult to access, in most vehicles, you are able to pull the manifold away from the engine far enough to insert the new gasket. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Set of sockets Set of wrenches Scraper Screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Remove the bolts or nuts on the exhaust manifolds, using the appropriate socket. If a socket will not fit -- it won't on certain vehicles where the bolt is too close to the pipe, especially on headers -- use the appropriate wrench to remove the bolts. 2 Pull the exhaust manifold gasket out from between the manifold and engine. Be sure that no gasket pieces fall into the manifold. If the gasket sticks to the manifold or the head, scrape it off with the scraper. 3 Slide the new gasket into place. If the vehicle uses nuts, it will have studs on the heads. Fit the bolt holes on the gasket over the studs and slide the gasket up against the head. If you removed bolts, match the gasket to the manifold, then insert a screwdriver into the manifold and through the gasket on each end, to help hold the gasket in place. 4 Position the manifold against the head and push the screwdrivers into the bolt holes on the head. While holding the manifold in place, insert a bolt into one of the empty holes and tighten it as far as you can by hand. Insert a second bolt and tighten it. Remove the screwdrivers. If you are working on a vehicle with studs, position the manifold on the studs against the head. Install the nuts and tighten them firmly. 5 Install the rest of the bolts on a manifold that uses bolts. Tighten them all by hand as far as you can. Firmly tighten the bolts with the appropriate socket or wrench. Tips & Warnings If you are working on a Chevrolet V-8, put lock washers on the bolts before inserting them. Not all bolts will loosen up after the initial tightening, but it's always best to double check, especially on high-horsepower engines with headers instead of the stock exhaust manifold. After driving 100 miles, tighten the bolts on all engines. After driving 500 miles, tighten the bolts on all engines. After driving 1,000 miles, if you are driving a Chevrolet with a big block, tighten the bolts again. *Some of today's vehicles have pressurized reservoirs. In these cases, you find the radiator pressure cap on the reservoir and not on the radiator. Most recovery systems are considered "sealed" because you can check whether your coolant needs changing — and add water and coolant — by opening the cap on the container. You can also check the level of liquid in the system by seeing whether it reaches the fill level shown on the side of the container. (For instructions on adding liquid to a sealed system safely, see "Using a coolant reservoir system" in Chapter 14.) The radiator pressure cap To further retard the boiling point of the liquid in the cooling system, the entire system is placed under pressure. This pressure generally runs between 393

As the pressure increases, the boiling point rises as well. This combination of pressure plus coolant gives the liquid in your cooling system the capability to resist boiling at temperatures that can rise as high as 250 degrees Fahrenheit or more in some new vehicles. To keep the lid on the pressure in the system, and to provide a convenient place to add water and coolant, each radiator has a removable radiator pressure cap on either its radiator filler hole or its coolant recovery system. The pressure cap has two valves: a pressure valve and a vacuum valve. The pressure valve maintains a precise amount of pressure on the liquid in the system. The vacuum valve allows the liquid to travel back into the radiator from the recovery reservoir when the engine cools down. .Chapter 8: The Cooling System Up Close 1 /.! ? If you have no coolant recovery system Today, most vehicles come with coolant recovery systems. If your vehicle lacks such a system and it overheats, you'll often notice liquid pouring out from under the car—especially if you're using the air conditioner on a very hot day. This liquid — which is usually colored and sometimes has white foam on it — is the water/ coolant mixture pouring out of the overflow pipe on your radiator. Because this liquid is toxic to small children and animals, be sure to clean up thoroughly, following the instructions in Chapter 14. Scion . they fill themselves. you can buy replacement line kits and almost any parts stores. the kits also come new compression fittings... Ford Econoline E350 Cargo. * When your engine heats up, the pressure in its system rises. If this pressure exceeds the level of pressure that your radiator cap is built to withstand and you don't have a recovery system, the liquid in the system bypasses the radiator cap and escapes through an overflow pipe located near the fill hole. This pipe provides a safe way for your vehicle to "let off steam." Of course, if this kind of overflow occurs often, your car loses enough water and coolant to substantially lower the level in the cooling system. You have to keep adding water, and eventually, the level of coolant protection is inadequate. To prevent this problem, you can buy and install a coolant recovery kit yourself by following the instructions in "Using a coolant recovery system" in Chapter 14. Pressure caps are relatively inexpensive, but if you have a cap that isn't working properly, or if you have the wrong type of cap, you'll be amazed at the amount of trouble it can cause. For example, if the gasket (rubber ring) inside the cap isn't working, the pressure in the system will escape, allowing the liquid to boil at a lower temperature. A modern cooling system that's been designed to operate normally at temperatures over 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and that is filled with liquid and in perfect condition, will still continually boil over if the radiator cap isn't operating efficiently. That boiling liquid will be forced into the overflow system, and your vehicle's engine will overheat. This can cause an inconvenient highway breakdown and possible danger to your engine. If your vehicle overheats on the highway, Chapter 21 can get you cooled down safely. The section "If Your Car Is a Chronic Hothead" in Chapter 14 offers remedies for other overheating problems. Although most vehicles come equipped with a safety pressure cap, which features a little lever that releases the pressure before you remove the cap, some older vehicles have a cap that lacks this feature. If you have one of these caps, replace it with a safety pressure cap immediately. Doing so can keep you from burning yourself if you have to remove the cap while there's still some pressure in the system. For this purpose, a fan is located behind the radiator, positioned so that it can draw air through the radiator (refer to Figure 8-1). Today, most fans have a plastic shroud that funnels air through the radiator. And some sports cars have air dams that help force the air up through the radiator from below. Originally, a fan belt drove the fan as long as the engine was running. Now, fan clutches on many vehicles automatically limit the fan's movement at speeds over 25 mph. Because the air rushing past them allows these fans to simply "coast" at high speeds, the engine doesn't have to work as hard or burn as much fuel to supply the power that the fans would normally con sume.
